I love the clean slate that the new year brings. For me, it is always a time to review and to re-evaluate where I am and where I am going. Perhaps, you too have been giving thought to your goals and direction for 2001. I hope so! If you don’t have a plan and vision for your business and your life, why don’t you come to one of the upcoming business planning weekends? You’ll leave energized and excited with clarity and focus! Booker T. Washington said, “Decide to be your best.” A simple suggestion, but one that can make the difference between ordinary and extraordinary. I know that I will succeed this year and be on the path I want to be if everyday I give it my best. It means doing a little more than I could get by with and taking the time to connect a little more with people, perhaps calling instead of emailing…. How would it look differently if you were being your best each day? Are you ready for MORE? I invite you to join me in having 2001 be the BEST year ever!

THE COACHING DISTINCTION OF THE MONTH

<<>>  **  <<>>  **  <<>>  ** <<>>   **  <<>>  **  <<>>  **

Source vs. Symptom

DEFINITIONS: Source: What’s at the root of a behavior or situation Symptom: How a problem manifests itself

COMPARISONS: Why something happens vs What happens

EXAMPLE: Betty seems to attract buyers that seem serious but turn out to be lookey loos, won’t make a decision or are generally difficult. Assessing the situation, she sees she is trying so hard to make every single buyer into a deal, she isn’t willing to let go of the needy ones. This is also causing her not to have the time or space for the serious clients.

KEY POINT: When something is unresolved at the source, different variations will continue to appear, until a shift or change is made at the source.

BENEFIT: Once you have the awareness of the source, you can make a shift. The symptoms and situations will stop showing up.

COACHING ACTIONS:

1. Find a symptom that keeps showing up over and over in different disguises. Maybe the client type that is abusive or disrespectful. Maybe a time crunch where you couldn’t do what you promised.

2. What is the source of the problems? Not setting boundaries? Taking on too much?

3. Ask yourself if there is some benefit you are getting when this happens.

4. Take action with the present situation, if there is one.

5. Use this awareness to create a game plan or solution for next time you face this situation

6. Be relentless in noticing when you about to go down the old path and stop and implement your new solution

ADVANTAGE THINKING: Life is Too Short!

<<>>  **  <<>>  **  <<>>  ** <<>>   **  <<>>  **  <<>>  **

As I spent a day with my two coaches, Marcia and Margaret and together we looked at what we wanted in 2001, we found we had a lot in common. Each of us had had a great year in 2000 and we were financially achieving the goals we had set for ourselves. But we each wanted MORE in 2001! Not MORE stuff or MORE money but MORE of joy and expressing our true selves. We discovered each of us were doing some things that we were very competent at and which we were getting paid well for but it wasn’t the stuff that “made our heart’s sing.”

As I coach others to find their purpose in life, be clear about their values and then design their work from that place, it causes me to continue to examine and re-examine if I am being a model of living that way. So, this year I will demand MORE from life! Much of the traditional advice I’ve learned about success has stressed working hard, staying focused and forcing my goals into being. I’m slowly learning the power of letting go. Watching for what comes to me, instead of forcing. As I listen to myself better and honor my values and what makes me joyful, I find I am a study in extremes. I love to travel and be on the go and then I love staying home with my hubby, Bub. I love to work hard on my peak performance days and then I love being able to stay in bed all day on a rainy day and just read. I love to learn and stretch and grow and I find I need the down time in between the growth spurts to let the growth become me.

My theme for this year is Zen and The Art of Winning The Game!

I want to play the extreme game this year and I like what Ray Lewis, Baltimore Raven MVP of the Superbowl said “The key to winning is having FUN”

So, I’m raising my standards for 2001:

Life is too short to work with jerks:

I will turn down opportunities to work with people who are difficult, uncoachable or high-maintence or aren’t a fit with my skills

Life is too short to perfect my weaknesses:

I will focus on bringing the best to what I do well and on what makes my heart sing… I will delegate or say no to those things that I’d have to struggle with

Life is too short to not enjoy each day:

I will have more fun and take things more lightly I will take exquisite care of myself

Life is too short to try to be perfect:

I will appreciate what I CAN do and know that it IS enough I will strive for excellence in all that I do, but allow myself to be human

Life is too short to put things ahead of people:

I will make time for connecting more and look for more opportunities I will take time and stop what I am doing to be with someone when I can

Life is too short to settle for less I will know what makes MY Heart Sing and GO For IT!

Do you know what makes your heart sing? Are you going for it? I’d love to hear what standard you are raising so you will get MORE in 2001.
