Joeann's Musings: My Winter Vacation.....

Life is too short to put off what you really want. Now, don't think I have turned into a short term hedonist, but now that I have lived the first 50+ years of my life, I am even more keenly aware of the importance for myself of having every single day be lived to its fullest. Maybe the 11 day vacation we just had in Hawaii has put me in reflective mood, but I sense it is more than that. There are just certain ways of living I am going to refuse in the 2nd 50+ years of my life.

First, you may have noticed that this is my first newsletter of the year. I have promised you a monthly newsletter and, yet, sometimes it is struggle to deliver. My maverick and right-brained self tends to rebel when forced into a repetitive schedule. This year I am going to honor myself and stop trying to "look good" or "do what a good coach should do" as a model, but allow myself to do the best I can. You'll be getting the newsletter, but I am not promising a monthly schedule.

Now, is that novel? Not expect and try to force myself to have to be perfect? Oh, my...will I start to lose credibility if I do it my way, instead of some formula I've bought into as the right way? Well, maybe, but the joy of taking a deep breath and saying, I will do MY best and quit trying to do it someone else's way.

Next, as I have led my business planning retreats and done coaching this year, a recurrent theme has cropped up. For many others, I am hearing what will make the most difference in peace, joyfulness and productiveness this year will be what we STOP doing, rather than new things to add.

In 2004,

  • I will stop scheduling my days with no "me" time.
  • I will set boundaries with people who waste my time and/or are negative.
  • I will see my friends more.
  • I will make playing with the baby and spending time with loved ones a priority and set time in my calendar every week that is inviolate to do this.
  • I will write more thank you notes.
  • I will stop saying yes to things, simply because there is nothing else scheduled.
  • I will stop answering every phone call
  • I will stop filling my calendar more than 60% scheduled
  • I will stop agreeing to anything that I truly don't want to do
I am committed to peacefulness this year being more important that proving I can work hard to be successful. Maybe they can co-exist but I am going to focus on the former and see if success doesn't show up as well, without the struggle.
Want to join me? Make your list of what you will stop doing this year and post it where you'll see it daily.

ADVANTAGE THINKING: Take More Vacations

Double your productivity        Take more vacations!

You’ve most likely experienced the super-effectiveness that kicks in when you are getting ready to go on vacation. That day before vacation becomes one of your most productive of the year. You know what has to be done, you have tightly time-framed the doing of it and you are in action until it is finished. So, the answer to the question, “How can I be more productive in 2004?” must be….

TAKE MORE VACATIONS!!!!!!!

Okay, okay….but I am not entirely kidding here. The first thing I ask my coaching clients to do when they are creating their yearly business plans is to schedule first those vacations and days off. Have you planned for your time off this year? If not, pull out your calendar right now and enter those days off, whether it is a 3 day weekend every month or a month’s cruise or vacation, or perhaps 2 or 3 two week vacations.Whatever your vision is of  how you’d enjoy all that money you are going to make this year, it should be in writing! Then, work your plan around this.

Just knowing you will be getting a reward for your hard work might motivate you to work a little harder or in a more focused manner. And, the vacations, if taken on a regular basis will begin to give you the rejuvenation and balance that everyone needs if they are working hard. It’s putting gas back into the gas tank. When you are rested, your focus and effectiveness improve. So, you’ll benefit, not only by having a super-effective day, before you go, but also having focused, effective days when you get back. This can also work even if you don’t leave town, but just “check out” and pretend you are off somewhere. For instance, you could stay home in your jammies all day and read a book, take a bubble bath and write notes or call old friends.

Here’s also another way to look at this:

I said what happens on that day before vacation is that you

1.     Know what has to be done

2.     Have tightly time-framed the doing of it

3.     Are in action until it is finished

What a great recipe for determining how to be more effective in your normal, day to day, activities.

Know what has to be done

Prioritize at the beginning of each day the activities that are going to give you the highest payoff that day. They may not be the most pressing-like taking care of that high maintaince client that is whining. Rather, activities like going to lunch with the person that referred you the most business last year or planning your mailings to your farm for the next 12 months, so you know what you are going to send and when and it is only a matter of implementation on the given date. What actions today will be in line with you achieving your goals for the year?

Have tightly time-framed the doing of it

At the beginning of each week and then each day, make sure those high payoff activities are on your calendar. Joeann's Rule of 3 says to choose the 3 things that would make the most difference towards your year long goals and focus on those first. It’s like having an appointment with yourself. If it isn't written down or entered in, chances are something less important will slip in and eat up your productive time. We sleaze out on our promises to ourselves when we would never do that with someone else. Be true to your  own highest purpose and vision.

Are in action until it is finished

Even if it takes staying a little later at the end of the day, get done those priorities. You’ll feel better about yourself and see the results that an extra 30 minutes can make. Hopefully, most of the time, knowing your priorities and setting aside the time on the calendar will suffice, but this added step of not stopping until it is done, will give you the final piece or power.  You will also start the next day with fewer undone projects to distract you.

If you think of yourself as a procrastinator, this one may be hard for you to discipline yourself to do. You have developed some bad habits of leaving things partially done or not getting to them. First, notice if your internal dialogue undermining you. Then stop saying awful things about yourself. Become conscious that this internal dialogue is disempowering and consciously re-program it.  By regularly implementing steps one and two, your self-confidence and pride will shift to a more powerful internal belief system (BS). Ask yourself if your current BS is sabotaging your efforts or does it make you feel great about yourself ?

Be poised for a fun and wonderful 2004. Schedule those vacations and time off now and then work like each day is the day before a vacation! You’ll be glad you did.

More Advantage Thinking: More about my vacation

I really  failed the test. On our outbound trip to Hawaii, which had been planned and scheduled last June-so we could fly first class and so it would be perfect, we missed our connection in LA.

Lesson #1 Always reconfirm your flight schedule

In the ensuing months since I had booked the reservations, the flight schedules had changed. America West's flight from Phoenix to LA arrived 20 minutes before the Hawaiian Flight departed and we had to leave one terminal, get to another, go through security and check in! Impossible and so it was really IMPOSSIBLE.I did sprint like OJ through the airport and got to the check in desk 7 minutes before take off, but they had given away our seats and she said there was no way to get through security and out to the gate......

Lesson #2 When you can't change something, don't spend time being a victim

This is the one where I REALLY failed. They were ruining my expertly planned vacation! I became very unenlightened and uncoachlike. First, I cried and talked to everyone at both airlines that would listen about how they were ruining my plan. Then, I pouted and obsessed over this grave inequity. The following flights, they told us were overbooked. We probably were going to have to spend the night in LA. We probably were going to get center seats and not get to sit together. They would do what they could, but it didn't look good. We were invited to hang out in the First Class lounge for 5 hours and wait and see what happened, but we'd probably have to spend the night in LA.

This did NOT look like my plan for the day and it wasn't my fault I whined to my husband. Sweet guy that he is, he only once quietly said something about being incredulous I hadn't reconfirmed, but quite quickly suggested we go get lunch. He remained unruffled and calm, looking on the bright side. I remained upset, worried and a sniveling baby. He suggested it was an adventure. I glared.

I'll spare you the intervening, painful 5 hours of  details and cut to the end...the Hawaiian flight did accommodate us, could put us together and in first class and the only delay was that we'd have to wait the next day to get to Kauai. Really not so bad. Certainly not worth the pain and suffering. I really failed the test!

Lesson #3 You will get to do over the test you fail.

Upon our return from Hawaii, I flew straight to Lansing Michigan to deliver a keynote at their Leadership Meetings. The next morning when I awoke the most beautiful snow was coming down in what I guess you guys that live in this kind of weather call a blizzard. I was done at 10 and my flight was at 4, so I called the airport to see if there was an earlier flight. Well, you know don't you? Not only was there not an earlier flight, but all the flights had been cancelled.

I hadn't been home now in 12 days. I began to get upset, and then I remembered. Getting upset was going to only ruin my experience of the day and not make a lick of a difference! Lessons, I find, tend to repeat themselves in different clothing until we get them. It took me 3 marriages to get it right (we just celebrated our 25th anniversary) and there have been many other lessons along the way that were variations on the same theme I was failing to grasp.

So, I had a chance to "get" this one twice in 2 weeks! I calmly called to see what my options were. I was flying Delta from Michigan to Chicago and American from Chicago to Phoenix. I found out what later flights there were out of Chicago and then went back to Delta to see what we could do. My choices were to wait until tomorrow or to get to Grand Rapids for a flight that could take me to Chicago in time for my connection. Of course, there was no guarantee Grand Rapids wouldn't cancel flights if the snow continued, but, hey, wasn't I the girl who has said she loves adventures?

It took a $100 cab ride in the blizzard to Grand Rapids, refusing to get upset when our flight was delayed and gave me 20 minutes to get to my connecting flight (did this sound familiar?) and a decision, this time I was going to just have fun and see what happened. and, as I am sure you guessed, it all worked. I even was able to talk them into flying me to Tucson instead of Phoenix at no extra cost!

Ah, how interesting life is. My imperfect self still thinks sometimes it can be in charge and force things to happen the way I want. My ego believes all those plans I so diligently craft are what is supposed to happen. Then Universe, in it's wisdom (or is it black humor?) gently (ok, maybe not so gently) reminds me that I am not in charge...I am just along for the ride and it will all work out the way it is supposed to. Hmmm....could that really be????<G>
