Joeann's Musings:  Blessings or Curses?

I was blessed to have the opportunity to spend 7 days in Taos NM at a Writer`s Spa Retreat with 23 wonderful women and  authors Jennifer Louden, Comfort Secrets for Busy Women: Finding Your Way When Your Life Is Overflowing and Suzanne Falter-Barnes, How Much Joy Can You Stand : A Creative Guide to Facing Your Fears and Making Your Dreams Come True. It was a remarkable retreat-My body, soul and mind were nurtured and invigorated! Thank you Suzanne, Jen and my new “spa sisters”.

And, by the last day, I was ready to get back into my real life… this was a bit of an “ah-ha” , realizing I could actually get to where I felt completely sated and re-energized and ready to want to get to work!  Have you been taking enough time for yourself to get completely nourished?  

On my drive home, I stopped in Chimayo to get the chili powder my husband, Bub, had requested and pick up a bit of the healing dirt from the Chimayo Santuario.  Carlos, the chili merchant, began a remarkable conversation as he sold me his goods. I am not certain whether I was attracting woo-woo energy from days of visioning or perhaps he just shares his wisdom with all who drop in to buy chili powder, but it was a rare conversation.

I must have said something that was without possibility, as Carlos quickly corrected and told me it “used to be that way.” I was surprised and thought his saying that was a little strange, but I asked him what he meant. He said to be careful of my words and never doubt their power. “Everything,” he said, “is either a blessing or a curse. Why would you want to keep cursing yourself?” He gave me an example of 2 women who had come to eat. One was a little hefty and said I can’t eat that fried food, it goes right to my hips. The other lady was thin and said, I can eat anything I want and I never gain weight.” And, so it was!

Carlos asked if I’d ever had a new car and if I took the torn and worn seats from the old car and put them into the new car. “Of course not,” I replied. He said,” But, isn’t that what people do? Say they are going to take on this great new goal and then lug along with them all the curses they have already been flailing themselves with?” Whew…I was going to have to ponder this for a bit! Good thing I had 10 hours of driving ahead of me :>)

As I left, Carlos reminded me that each day is the opportunity to start fresh. To let go of yesterday. To stop cursing ourselves and to start seeing how blessed we are. To accept what comes each day as the opportunity to have what we really, really want because we can change our minds (and thus our limiting thoughts) at any moment.

I’m watching carefully where I am cursing myself and changing it to a blessing! How about you? Do you have some worn cushions you need to throw out of that new car?

While at the Writer’s Spa, I was reminded of a powerful time management distinction: to arrange my day around my top priority rather than trying to fit it in. Now, that may seem obvious and simple and yet it just doesn’t happen most of the time. Do you, like me, struggle to find time for those activities that would make the most difference in terms of joy or productivity? Does life throw endless distractions your way that suck the life out of your days?

I know the successful people in life have not figured out a way to get more minutes in the day, but just use their minutes in a better way. They know what is important, they can say no and they make conscious choices, rather than being a victim of the external circumstances.

I left Taos intentional that I would write more each week and knowing it would happen because I have taken 2 important actions. First, I have time blocked it as an appointment on my calendar. It is entered in my TREO as a recurring appointment 2x per week. If the days I have chosen do not work, I will not delete it, but rather reschedule it.  Second, I have a partner with whom I will be communicating with on a weekly basis. We will make promises, hold each other accountable and cheer each other on! (Hmmm…sounds like a coach, doesn’t it?)

My days will begin to orient around this priority and I will use the process each week to also orient around my other important priorities. What do you want to bet this last quarter is going to be a GREAT one?????

ACTION STEP>  Take out your calendar for the coming week and time block the activities that represent action on your 3 most important priorities for the week. First, identify what they are. Is it time for yourself and/or family? Time to prospect and connect with past customers and clients? Strategizing some new niches? Next timeblock  appointments with yourself to focus on this area. Even if it is just baby steps, forward action will begin to accumulate. If you do this weekly for the rest of the year…it may turn out to be your best quarter of the year! And then Get A Coach or someone you will use to keep you accountable !
