Joeann's Musings: Gratitude and Memories |
|
Life is sweet! And, every day above ground is a good one.
I am teaching a class on Advanced Personal Development
with a group of coaches this month.
Their assignment for the class was
to develop a project that would
reflect growth in their Advanced
Personal Development. One of the
students has chosen as her project “Stress-free
and Joyful Holidays.” She
plans to only do the things that
give her real joy (In this vein,I
gave up doing Christmas cards a few
years ago). She’s going to only
accept the invitations that she
wants to do, only do the cooking and
entertaining that she enjoys and is
making a conscious effort to have
delight in each day.
One of my personal tactics for the holidays is to plan
ways to create memories instead of
spending money on more stuff. (One
year, I took the family on the train
to Matzalan Mexico for Christmas
week and played on the beach!)
My student’s project, actually, a pretty good formula for
living any time of the year. Other’s
expectations of us and our own
societal “shoulds” sometimes have us
living a life that isn’t really our
own. When we resent the demands of
others and of the world…we waste
precious energy. Better to
disappoint a few others than sell
out on ourselves! Be true to
yourself this holiday season and
then see what changes you can make
in 2005 for more joy and less
stress.
My personal theme for 2005 is
Experience the Extraordinary.
My intention, each day, will be
to create a memory, luxuriate in the
abundance in my life and to connect
with those who inspire me and those
who I love. Do you have a guiding
theme for next year? What daily
actions would manifest it?
As I look back on 2004, I have a lot to be grateful for.
My sweet, but manic-depressive
daughter has finally been stabilized
on medication that works, has been
clean and sober for almost 19 months
and just graduated from a year long
program to be a Licensed Massage
therapist. My Daddy celebrated his
85th birthday and is
pretty healthy and happy. My smart
son has had a good year investing
and developing real estate. Lily, my
brilliant (no, I am NOT
prejudiced…she truly is!)
granddaughter delights me daily! My
wonderful husband and I celebrated
his 60th birthday with a
5000+ mile road trip vacation that
reminded us of how incredibly
beautiful and prosperous this
wonderful country of ours is. I have
been blessed in my career to have
the opportunity to coach some of the
most inspiring people on the planet
and be invited to speak to diverse
groups that are striving to be the
best they can! Life is sweet. What
in your 2004 do you have gratitude
for?
I also am noticing as each year passes, I am losing a few
more friends, who have completed
their missions on earth. I am
reminded that Richard Bach (who
wrote
Jonathon Livingston Seagull)
said if you want to know if your
mission on earth is complete: if you
are still here, it isn’t ! But I’ll
miss friends like past WCR National
President Joan Deal when I attend
national meetings. And relatives,
like my first husband, Richie, as we
celebrate our first Christmas
without him. But I know I have the
love and memories of time spent
together from each person that is no
longer “above ground” and that can
never be lost or diminished…it is
their lasting legacy. They made a
difference!
So,…. as I end this year, thank you for the opportunity
to be able to be part of your life.
Thanks for giving me a place to
share some thoughts that, hopefully,
have given you a couple of
perspectives to think from and maybe
even, occasionally, have expanded
your thinking or effectiveness. It
is my mission to connect with others
to ignite joy, creativity and love!
I will see you in 2005! It’s going
to be an EXTRAORDINARY YEAR!!!!! |

ADVANTAGE THINKING: It’s
not what you make, it’s what you
keep! |
|
As 2004 comes to an end, you have, hopefully, gathered
your numbers and have a pretty good
idea about how well you did this
year. For many, I know it’s been a
great year. The favor you can do
yourself right now, if that has been
the case, is take a few actions to
minimize your tax liability. Give
your accountant a call and ask what
you actions you can take between now
and December 31st.
Probably one piece of advice you will get is to make
needed purchases before the end of
the year, taking the write-offs in
2004. If you have worked on your
business plan for 2005, look at your
technology plan and determine what
new equipment, software, programs
that you intend to invest in. Decide
if it would be smart to do it this
money. You can even charge it by the
end of the year and not pay for it
until next year and it still counts
toward 2004!
COACH’S
ACTION CHALLENGE>
If
additional write-offs would be a
good move….
Set aside 30 minutes this week to determine what
purchases you need to make. A new
tablet computer? A portable printer?
A TREO?
Pat Zaby’s newly updated Marketing Library or RESPOND?
Enrolling in the ePRO Course or a
GRI, CRS, ABR, PMN Class? Or one of
my Games or the yearlong program?
Prepaying Coaching?
Then get it taken care of, knowing you just saved
yourself some money!!!
COACH’S BONUS ACTION CHALLENGE>
It’s not what you make, it’s what
you keep!
In looking at those 2004 numbers,
what was the most effective
generator of business for you in
2004? Where did you get the highest
return for dollars/time spent? Have
you planned to do more in this area
to go deeper, rather than wider? Ask
yourself right now, what one action
done consistently in my business
would give me the biggest payoff
next year? Make sure your business
plan has included a strategy to do
this! Work smarter in 2005…not
harder! |

Shakti Gawain starts her book by
saying,”
Most of us think that being prosperous
means having plenty of money” and then
she offers a larger outlook on
prosperity, one beyond the normal limits
of money. Her definition of prosperity
proposes it is not bankrolls and
material possessions, but rather a
fulfilled heart and soul. Interviewing
people about their views of prosperity,
she has found that most, regardless of
their wealth, feel a serious lacking in
their overall sense of well-being. Using
a fresh approach, she challenges the
Western tendency to equate money with
happiness, encouraging readers to
examine their longings honestly, follow
them to their roots, and separate them
from false desires or addictions.
Writing with authority and warmth,
Gawain shows readers how to create true
prosperity in satisfying relationships
and the kind of happiness not dependent
on possessions or circumstances.
I still wrestle with accepting with the
biggest insight I got from this book:
That the opposite of hard work is not
laziness, but relaxation!
